What Is Ti-6Al-7Nb Titanium Bar?

Ti-6Al-7Nb (titanium-6aluminum-7niobium, Ti6Al7Nb) is an alpha-beta titanium alloy identified by UNS R56700. ASTM F1295 governs wrought Ti-6Al-7Nb products for surgical implant manufacture, defining chemical composition, mechanical properties and metallurgical requirements. The current edition, ASTM F1295-24, covers bar, wire and related product forms.

Compared with commercially pure titanium, Ti-6Al-7Nb delivers greater mechanical strength while retaining titanium's characteristic corrosion resistance and low density - properties that matter most where implant traceability and consistent composition are non-negotiable.

TSM Technology supplies Ti-6Al-7Nb bar to defined material and inspection requirements, machined to custom dimensions ready for downstream component manufacturing.

Chemical Composition of Ti-6Al-7Nb

Ti-6Al-7Nb is a controlled medical titanium alloy. Typical specification limits include aluminum and niobium as the principal alloying elements, with controlled levels of tantalum, iron, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen. The balance is titanium.

Element ASTM F1295 Requirement*
Aluminum (Al) 5.50–6.50%
Niobium (Nb) 6.50–7.50%
Tantalum (Ta) ≤ 0.50%
Iron (Fe) ≤ 0.25%
Oxygen (O) ≤ 0.20%
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.08%
Nitrogen (N) ≤ 0.05%
Hydrogen (H) ≤ 0.009%
Titanium (Ti) Balance

*Reference values only - always verify against the current ASTM F1295 edition and the certified MTC for a given order.

Mechanical Properties

Ti-6Al-7Nb titanium bar is supplied in controlled material conditions to meet the mechanical and metallurgical requirements of the applicable specification.

For annealed material, commonly referenced minimum mechanical requirements include:

Property Minimum Requirement*
Tensile Strength ≥ 900 MPa
Yield Strength ≥ 800 MPa
Elongation ≥ 10%

*Mechanical requirements depend on the applicable ASTM F1295 edition, product size and condition. Final acceptance values should be confirmed against the applicable material standard and supplied MTC.

ASTM F1295 also requires lot-based tensile testing to verify these properties before release.

Available Sizes and Custom Ti-6Al-7Nb Bars

TSM Technology's titanium bar production range covers diameters from 6 mm to 300 mm for its general titanium bar supply, with customized dimensions available. The exact size range for Ti-6Al-7Nb under ASTM F1295 should be confirmed according to the required material condition, manufacturing process and order specification.

We produce and machine Ti-6Al-7Nb bar to the following customer-defined parameters:

  • Diameter and diameter tolerance
  • Length (standard or cut-to-size)
  • Surface finish
  • Heat treatment / delivery condition
  • Machining allowance for further processing
  • Testing scope (mechanical, UT, metallographic)
  • Material certification level
  • Export packaging requirements

For precision-machined medical components, customers can provide drawings or detailed technical specifications for review.

Medical Applications of Ti-6Al-7Nb Titanium Bar

Orthopedic Implants

Ti-6Al-7Nb bar is machined into orthopedic components including:

  • Bone screws
  • Bone plates and fixation hardware
  • Joint replacement components
  • Spinal implant components
  • Other load-bearing implant parts

Dental Applications

The alloy is also used for select dental implant components where ASTM F1295 or equivalent specifications apply.

Surgical Implant Components

ASTM F1295 specifically addresses wrought Ti-6Al-7Nb for surgical implant manufacture, and the U.S. FDA recognizes ASTM F1295 as a consensus standard for medical devices.

Ti-6Al-7Nb vs Ti-6Al-4V

Both Ti-6Al-7Nb and Ti-6Al-4V are alpha-beta titanium alloys used in demanding applications, including medical applications. Their alloying systems and applicable medical standards are different.

Item Ti-6Al-7Nb Ti-6Al-4V ELI
Alloy Ti-6Al-7Nb Ti-6Al-4V ELI
UNS R56700 R56401
Main Alloying Elements Aluminum + Niobium Aluminum + Vanadium
Medical Standard ASTM F1295 ASTM F136
ISO Standard ISO 5832-11 ISO 5832-3
Typical Use Surgical implant materials Surgical implant materials
Product Forms Bar, wire and other wrought forms Bar, wire, plate and other forms

ASTM F1295 identifies Ti-6Al-7Nb as UNS R56700, while ASTM F136 covers wrought Ti-6Al-4V ELI for surgical implant applications.

The appropriate alloy should be selected according to the implant design, applicable regulatory requirements, material specification and customer drawing rather than simply by comparing nominal strength.
