Titanium materials

Titanium metal density is small, 4.5g / cm3, only 60% of iron, usually it is called light metal with aluminum, magnesium etc., its corresponding titanium alloy, aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy is called light alloy. Many countries in the world are aware of the importance of titanium alloy materials, titanium alloy materials have been research and development, and has been used in practical application.

Titanium is an important structural metal developed in the 1950s. Titanium alloys have been widely used in various fields because of their high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, high heat resistance and easy welding. Especially the performance of High strength and easy welding is conducive to the manufacture of golf club head.

The first useful titanium alloy Ti-6Al (aluminum) -4V (alum) is developed in 1954 in the United States . Ti-6Al-4V alloy has good heat resistance, strength, plasticity, toughness, form-ability, weld-ability, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Ti-6Al-4V alloy used rate is occupied 75 ~ 85% in all titanium alloy. Many other alloys can be seen as Ti-6Al-4V alloy modification.

At present, the world has developed hundreds of titanium alloy, the most famous alloy has twenty to thirty kinds, for example, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-2Al-2.5Zr, Ti-32Mo, Ti-Mo-Ni, Ti-Pd, Ti-811, SP-700, Ti-6242, Ti-1023, Ti-10-5-3, Ti-1100, BT9, BT20, IMI829, IMI834 ; For the club manufacturing are 10-2-3, SP700, 15-3-3-3 (commonly referred to as β titanium), 22-4, DAT51.

Titanium alloy can be divided into α, α + β, β-type alloy and titanium aluminum intermetallic compounds (TixAl, where x = 1 or 3) four categories. The following table lists four typical titanium alloys and features.

Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo toughness in general, good welding performance, strong oxidation resistance, high creep strength

Less used in golf club head manufacturing.

Α + β Ti-6Al-4V

Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo strength and toughness in the heat treatment can be strengthened, welding, fatigue performance

Used in casting head, such as irons, fairway wood and so on.

Β Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al



Ti-8Cr-5Mo-5V-3Al high strength, strong heat treatment strengthening, malleability and cold form-ability

Can be adapted to a variety of welding methods.

Used for forging head.

TixAl Ti3Al (α2) and TiAl (γ) use temperature is expected to reach 900 ℃, but poor plastic toughness at room temperature
